Guardrail 01 of 10 · The Quantrim Guardrails Framework

Someone owns it. Not a team, a name.

Ask any business where an AI decision went wrong who was accountable, and too often the answer is “the AI team”, or nobody at all. Named Ownership is the first guardrail because everything else depends on it: one person, named, with the authority to pause a system that is not working.

In practice

What named ownership actually looks like

A name, not a team

Every AI system we help you deploy has one named business owner, not a shared inbox or a committee.

Sign-off before launch

That owner signs off before anything goes live, and reviews performance on a schedule, not only when something breaks.

Real authority to pause

The owner has the authority to pause or roll back a system, and knows they are expected to use it.

Written down

Ownership is recorded in the same register that tracks every other system the business runs, not left to memory.

Why it matters

Accountability that diffuses is accountability that disappears

When ownership is shared across a team, it belongs to nobody in practice. Naming one owner per system is the single change that makes every other guardrail enforceable, because there is always a person to ask.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What if we don’t have anyone senior enough to own this?

Fractional AI leadership can hold this role for you a few days a month until someone internal is ready. Ownership does not have to mean a new hire. See fractional AI consulting.

Does naming an owner slow deployment down?

No, it speeds it up. Deciding who owns a system before it launches is what stops the multi-week “who approved this” scramble later.
